Ben-
I think you have hit on the concept of the 'internal compass'. But alas, true north is more difficult to find than one may think.

I believe that people enjoy what they have have a lot more, and it means more to them, when they have to 'work for it'. Since you are a long distance runner as well as a creator, I think you understand.

With those who have wealth thrust upon them, they look for that so called struggle to enjoy it more. But some lack the fortitude to really see the struggle through to the end - or they delude themselves into believing what a struggle really is.

So Brittany Spears shaving her head, Madonna going through process of adopting internationally (wonder if she had to do what you and I did to bring our childern home) Paris Hilton doing... well, point made. These are feeble attempts at humanizing their stature and wealth to who? Us, themselves- the adoring public?

But those who have wealth and want the sense of accomplishment that comes with working for even more - need to heed your counsel. Take you wealth and put it to work...with you leading the charge.

What is better...the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation....or Steve Jobs re-creating and saving Apple...or the multi-millionare becoming a world class tri-athlete? Its a perspective that comes down to doing something that results from hard work and the bearing of that dang internal compass.
It shouldnt matter what you have in the bank- or in the trust fund- if you want to make a difference and feel a sense of self fulfillment, YOU HAVE TO DO SOMETHING DIFFICULT. It very well could make you and the world a little bit better.

Hi Ben,
Great post. The two young people you profiled have a lot to learn about real life and the best way to help people. Capitalism is still the best economic system for providing equal opportunity for creating wealth and for providing jobs. One of the best ways to help the poor is to provide them with meaningful work and an opportunity to help themselves. I hope these young people learn these principles before their inheritances are squandered.
